In 1984, President Ronald Reagan issued a presidential proclamation designating the last week of June as \u201cHelen Keller Deaf-Blind Awareness Week.\u201d Every year since, the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths & Adults (HKNC) celebrates the week with a national advocacy campaign recognizing the achievements and capabilities of people who are deaf-blind.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, the Helen Keller Deaf-Blind Awareness Week is from June 25 to July 1, 2017. The theme is the power of touch.<\/p>\n

While communication technology for the deaf and blind has evolved dramatically over the last 50 years, the deaf-blind community recognizes that it\u2019s important to know when to put down the technology and connect through the power of touch. In a world so focused on digital communication, we can sometimes forget what the deaf-blind community still holds as most important when it comes to building relationships – the best connection is the human connection.<\/span>
