WHO IS DCET Structure: We are a 501(c)3, nonprofit corporation under IRS employer number 31-1640064 who applies for funding to Corporations, Foundations and Federal Government. We have a Board of Directors comprised of 11 individuals who are dedicated professionals who believe in DCET’s mission. Fundraising efforts are been overseen by our Fundraising Board Director and the ED of the Corporation, CFRE Ms. Elvia Wallace-Martinez. We request funds to enable us to apply our successful approaches in working with families who suffer language barriers and lack of educational and cultural programs which in turn results in economic problems. We are instrumental assisting our target population with Literacy and Community and Mentoring programs which have proved to be effective in increasing self-esteem while motivating our students who turn into productive members of society. Our organization's Mission is: To provide literacy programs, workforce development programs, and other educational, cultural and mentoring initiatives for undeserved low and moderate-income immigrants in its majority Hispanic/Latino youth and their families in their process of assimilation and acculturation, allowing them to become productive members of society and not welfare dependents. Our incredible Vision: We see LA ESCUELITA (The Little School, in Spanish) community Learning Centers all over locally, regionally and nationally. We see a dedicated team of professional people teaching ESL, GED, Citizenship, Computer and Spanish Literacy classes educating immigrant families providing them with solutions to their needs while adjusting to the cultural and DCET is a non-profit organization that was incorporated in 1998 to address the educational, mentoring and leadership needs to the Hispanic community. DCET Executive Director and founder, Elvia Wallace-Martinez has built this organization into one that is creating new programs and opportunities for Irving, Dallas and Grand Prairie, TX residents of all ages. “Debes Creer en Ti” (DCET), which is the Spanish acronym for Believe in Yourself is dedicated to provide Educational and Cultural programs for the social and economic well being of Hispanic youth and their families, helping them in the areas of literacy, mentoring, parenting, personal, and workforce development, as well as with information and referral services. DCET is under employment number: 31-164-0064 and accredited by The Internal Revenue Service, as a 501©(3) nonprofit organization. WE ARE RAISING MONEY FOR EDUCATION The NEED or OPPORTUNITY Our recipients are the parents of first generation Hispanic students who come into the school system in need of language assistance and acculturation. They are in its majority low socioeconomic families who have not finished high school. We assist the parents and children of these families with Literacy programs. Our target population confronts serious barriers to employment resulting in sometimes putting their young children to work. The Hispanic dropout rate in large metropolitan areas is the largest. According to the Employment Commission of the States Business Advisory Commission, there were almost 630,000 Hispanics 20 to 24 years old who had dropped out of school. Many of these dropouts are included in data that supports the claim that 22% of the US Spanish speaking population is completely illiterate. We at DCET are taking the firm initiative to develop and support projects which focus on positive solutions related to this immense illiteracy problem. We recruit the parents of our youth target population to take our free ESL, GED, Spanish and computer literacy programs while also offering to them Citizenship courses. HOW WILL DCET USE THE FUNDS We are planning to raise $70,600 for our ESL, GED and Citizenship programs. Right now we have surpassed our goal of $12,000 from our upcoming CINCO DE MAYO Festival (May 4, 2016) in sponsorship and vendors’ fees. Dr. David and Martha Alammel are contributing with $1,000.00, and a projected $95,000 is estimated to be raised from our annual YOUTH IN COLLEGE annual conference in November, 2017. NEED OF FUNDS BY OCTOBER, 2017 THIS CAUSE MEANS A LOT FOR US Your reward in donating to this project is basically saving the lives of many families like the Garcias' who live at poverty level and who was not able to afford to enroll their children in our mentoring FAMA program. Mrs. Maricela Garcia came to our ESL program on March 2016. After 9 months she was able to understand and read English. Her difficulty was in expressing the language. She was very enthused about DCET offering her free Computer and Internet courses in April of 2016 and took the time to educate herself for betterment. Once she learned about our programs she immediately enrolled her two boys in our Arts Mentoring program - We referred her to Salvation Army for help with Early Childhood Development enrollment. She was in their waiting list and due to language barriers she couldn’t follow up in calling about the waiting list status. She used our Information and Referral system and was able to secure a place for her 3-year-old daughter. Then in May, she graduated from the our 180-hour computer course. After graduation, she was very thankful to DCET. She is now an active volunteer who has been assisting DCET with accounting postings, and administration work at our Family Learning Center “La Escuelita”. If you help us with your donations your reward will be in helping families like the Garcias become productive members of this society.
