About Coalition for Healthy School Food
The Coalition for Healthy School Food (CHSF) is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit that introduces plant-based foods and nutrition education in schools to educate the whole school community about the health, environmental, and social justice issues of our food choices. Getting more plant-based foods on school menus, and teaching students, their families, teachers, administrators, and food service professionals about the benefits of a more plant-based diet results in better attendance, grades, and behavior. It helps students be healthier now and in the future. But reducing animal products in our diets is also the biggest thing we can do as individuals to address climate change. While unhealthy food harms all people, the BIPOC (black, indigenous, people of color) community is disproportionately impacted, and therefore is an equity issue, most especially, but not exclusively, in relation to dairy. A more plant-based diet is also kinder to animals. In addition to the other food-related issues, we teach about kindness to animals. This is something that most schools teach in relation to companion animals, yet what is done to animals raised for food is not kind.
