About Teacher Academy of Maryland (Northern High School)
The Teacher Academy of Maryland (TAM) is a Career and Technology Education (CTE) program of study that seeks to address the persistent teacher shortage challenge by creating a pipeline of teacher candidates from grades 6-12. Middle and high school students who are interested in careers in education enter the pipeline via Educators Rising and maintain active membership in Educators Rising throughout their high school experiences. High school students start the TAM program of study in tenth grade and complete a four-course sequence that ends in twelfth grade. The courses in the TAM program of study are: Human Growth and Development through Adolescence, Teaching as a Profession, Foundations of Curriculum and Instruction, and the Education Academy Internship. The four TAM courses give students early exposure to the teaching profession. TAM students also have the potential to earn three college credits while still in high school provided they attend a higher education institution that awards such credits. TAM prepares students for further education and careers in the education field such as: Child welfare social worker Childcare services Children's book author College instructor Community organization leader Counselor Education administrator Industry facilitator/trainer Librarian/media specialist Preschool/elementary/secondary teacher/director Recreation leader Researcher Sociologist Teacher's assistant The money we raise from this fundraiser will go toward 2 things First toward giving these students a more well rounded experience while in this program. It will pay for busses to go on field trips to local elementary schools, middle schools, charter schools and early learning facilities in our community to observe classes, participate in mentorship programs, and get hands on teaching experience. These experiences play a huge role in shaping these young future educators, and it is vital that we have the funding to help defray the cost of transportation because the more real world experience these students have the better they will be at educating the future children of our community. Second, we would like to buy 10 laptops for our senior internship students to use (although all TAM students will use them throughout their pathway for various projects and such). These students have the amazing opportunity to serve as an intern in a local middle or elementary school for their entire senior year, They become essentially a student teacher by second semester and are planning lessons, teaching and grading. Having laptops available to help them plan smart board lessons or warm ups, create activities and centers and enter grades would be extremely helpful. They are also responsible for creating a pre-professional portfolio reflecting their teaching experience which includes artifacts and reflections they have gathered throughout the pathway, Having laptops available would make this process much easier and more efficient. Teacher Academy of Maryland students want to come back after college and teach our local children and enrich our local schools; help them be the very best they can be by simply giving a gift to someone special!!!!
