Transplant House

About Transplant House
Founded by transplant recipients and volunteers in 2006, the mission of Transplant House (TH) is to provide housing for people of all ages that have uprooted their lives and moved to Seattle to await or recover from a life-saving transplant; and to conduct fundraising activities in order to continue to provide and furnish housing for transplant patients and their caregiver. Other than Seattle, no place in the Pacific Northwest, including Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Eastern Washington, offer transplant procedures. Since recipients must visit the doctors several times a week and they need to be close to the hospital in case of an emergency, most recipients stay in TH apartments between four and 24 weeks. Some stay for years. While living in Seattle, the recipients continue to incur living expenses for back home. Faced with health concerns, financial worries and the emotional ups and downs, people from all walks of life come to Seattle worried about where they can afford to live. Conveniently located near the UW Medical Center, groceries and pharmacies, Transplant House provides 27 safe, affordable one and two-bedroom apartments that are furnished, maintained and cleaned in accordance with UW Medicine protocols for reducing risk of infection. The fee for each ADA-accessible apartment includes a fully-outfitted kitchen; linens and bedding; private bathroom(s); in-unit washer & dryer ; all utilities; basic cable; a local phone number with free US calling; high-speed internet service; and controlled access to a secured and monitored underground parking facility with one designated parking space per apartment. The purpose of this project request is to provide housing assistance for transplant recipients for ~3.5 months per year for three years in a one-bedroom apartment. Transplants are expensive, even for those with health insurance. Approximately 60% of the Transplant House guests are Medicaid recipients. We help ease this financial burden by providing apartments at below-market rates. Transplants are the beginning of the journey. Patients will incur lifetime medical expenses for follow-up care and prescriptions. While surgeries are generally covered by insurance, transplant recipients are responsible for the other cost, including food, lodging, and transportation near the transplant center if required for the transplant patient evaluation and follow-up checkups; lab tests; physical or occupational therapy and other treatment; the cost of anti-rejection drugs and other medications, which can easily exceed $10,000 per year for the lifetime of the transplanted organ; non-covered medical costs (for example, blood pressure monitors); loss of income while out of work; as well as, insurance or Medicare premiums, copays, and deductibles. While Medicaid will pay for some housing expenses, after the spend-down is met, some insurance companies will only pay a portion of the pre- and post-transplant housing expenses. Each month, we must turn away potential transplant recipients because we can only afford to offer very few a small amount of housing assistance. This request will allow Transplant House to say "yes" and provide access to affordable housing for transplant patients that truly need help to ensure that their transplant remains viable.
