Literacy isn't about being a bookworm, it is about reaching our full potential AND being safe. Personal safety is at risk when you can't understand the instructions on a prescription bottle. It is hard to get to the next rung of the ladder when you cannot write a resume that describes your accomplishments. We think of literacy as reading, but it is much more. It is a skillset we learn with lots of practice: practice reading, practice writing, practice communicating. * Readers need access to books. * Writers need ideas and inspiration. * Parents want help. Being a reader doesn't make us a literacy teacher, though, as caregivers, it is one of our many roles. The Reading Tub literacy portal (https://thereadingtub.org) provides free access to resources that support caregivers in their efforts to help a child become a successful person. * Book lists and reviews help them select books that match their reader's interests and reading abilities. * How-to articles show them ways to model and incorporate literacy concepts into everyday living. * Video and other resources demonstrate best practices and positive outcomes. As a 100% volunteer charity, all donations go to directly support our family and children's literacy programs. We don't do fancy galas or big fundraisers. We want ALL donations to reach those in need. The Reading Tub literacy portal is free and always available. In addition to our online presence, we work with other nonprofits and educators to get books to at-risk readers who have no reading material in their home, as well as Title I schools who don't have funds for classroom libraries.
