RedBubble at a Glance

At RedBubble, they take creativity seriously. “Creativity is the meaning which we bring into our lives,” says RedBubble co-founder Martin Hosking. “Recognizing its importance is one of the great things you can do in life.” It’s no wonder, then, that they built their business around connecting artists and designers with shoppers who want products with uncommon designs that speak to their individual tastes.

Born in Melbourne, Australia in 2006 to Matt Hosking, Peter Styles, and Paul Van Zeller, RedBubble connects artists, manufacturers, and consumers in a global marketplace for independent art. Their goal is to help independent artists find a market for their work, and help consumers find original products with designs they love while supporting independent artistry and small-scale production. RedBubble now boasts designs from over 700,000 artists and ships to consumers all around the world, with offices in Melbourne, Berlin, and San Francisco — 95% of those shipments originate in the same region where they’re headed, thanks to connections with local manufacturers.

Here’s how it works: artists create free accounts and upload their own original designs, setting the price and the kinds of products available for each design. Available products range from things like T-shirts and stickers to bathmats and duvet covers. Art lovers can then browse by artist, keyword, or product to find the items they’re looking for featuring art they love. Each item is then made to order by local printers before being shipped to the consumer. (On-demand manufacturing means less guesswork about what products retailers and consumers need, which then leads to less overproduction of stock and less waste. That’s good for the producer and for the planet!)

Execs at RedBubble emphasize the importance of the global creative community, and the goal of supporting creative people. This not only means supporting the artists whose designs are on their products, but all the people who want to exhibit their personal style with the products available on the site. Whatever your style, RedBubble wants you to be able to rock it. “We don’t judge, and we’re here to support you,” says Creative Director Chas McFeely.

In an effort to engage even more with artists and designers, RedBubble also hosts a residency program in their Melbourne and San Francisco offices, where local artists are allowed use of RedBubble’s studio space to work on creative projects of their own. One artist might be working on a video project, or another might be working on a collaborative book series. In each case, the relationship between “Bubblers” (aka RedBubble employees) and artists has proven symbiotic: artists are given resources and tools they need to work on their projects, Bubblers find inspiration from the artists they support, and both reap the benefit of the creative community RedBubble seeks to foster.
